摘要

The purpose of this paper is twofold:first, to present a compilation of current (3/73) manufacturers' data on carbon fibers for fiber selection and, second, to indicate how these data can be used to aid in fiber selection for carbon fiber/pyrocarbon matrix composites. The manufacturers' reported properties are defined and tabulated. The carbon fiber properties necessary to predict the tensile strength and Young's modulus of carbon fiber/chemical-vapor-deposited (CVD) carbon matrix composites are significantly different from manufacturers' reported data. The effective physical properties of the fibers in the CVD matrix are controlled by strand mechanics and may also be altered by heat treatments. The standard methods of determining fiber properties are contrasted with those needed for carbon composite analysis. Also a scheme for determining the effects of heat treatment on fiber mechanical properties is presented.
