An Investigation of Explosion-Induced Ground Motion and Its Relationship to Natural Seismicity

This report summarizes the major accomplishments achieved over the time period from July 1972 through June 1973 under sponsorship of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission Contract AT(11-1)-2138. Accumulative strain energy release maps for the area bounded by 35ºN to 42.5°N and 113.5°W to 121°w were computed with a perspective representation for the time period 1852-1972. The area was divided into one-guarter degree grid units and the strain energy release was determined for each unit. A statistical study of the seismicity of the Nevada Test Site area was made for the time period Mav 1969 through December 1972. These studies indicate that the pattern of seismic activity induced by large underground tests has decreased to the point that by mid-1972 the activity probably reflects the level of the natural seismicity for the area.
