Induction and Use of Associate Degree Workers in the Mental Health System.

The Southern Regional Education Board conducted a project to assist community colleges of the South in the development of associate of arts level training programs for mental health technicians, and to assist mental health agencies in the development of job descriptions, salary schedules and patterns for utilization of these graduates. While the employment of graduates of these programs has generally been good, it is suggested that special attention be given to the introduction and use of mental health technicians into the employment system. In addition, it is noted that changes in federal support for mental health services, via limiting funds for training, may seriously reduce the number of professionals available. For this reason, manpower and staff development for all levels of workers should be a major concern of mental health program leaders. Faculty responsibilities regarding the induction and use of mental health technology graduates in agencies are discussed, as are recommendations for mental health technicians upon entering employment.
