The Shippingport Atomic Power Station is operated for the AEC by the Duquesne Light Company. The station is located on the south bank of the Ohio River on a 400-acre site approximately 25 air miles west of Pittsburgh, about 10 air miles west of Aliquippa, and about 11 miles below the confluence of the Beaver and Ohio Rivers. The reactor has a closed cycle pressurized water cooling system and operates at about 100 MW electrical. The station achieved full power December 23, 1957, and has operated continuously except for shutdowns necessary for routine maintenance and refueling.
