摘要

The chemical nature of the anion permeability sites in human red blood cells has been studied with probes designed to interact with amino groups on the outer surface of the membrane and to inhibit the permeability. The effectiveness of different disulfonic stilbene probes depends on their electrostatic, covalent and hydrophobic characteristics. A bifunctional and fluorescent analog carrying a radioactive tracer (DIDS) was found to inactivate more than 90% of the exchange component of anion permeability (chloride and sulfate) when only 200,000 molecules are bound to the membrane. A linear relationship exists between the binding of the probe to the membrane and the inhibition of the function.
