CYFILE:A SYSTEM OF SELF-EXPLANATORY MASTER FILES

The CYFILE system is a set of file-handling routines and programs that create, edit, process, and retrieve self-explanatory master files. The system was written to facilitate statistical and graphical analysis of human chromosomes, but it was designed also to be generally applicable to any data base used for statistical analysis. The files created by the system contain alphameric identifiers, similar to FORTRAN names, that reference and label both descriptive variables and measurement variables in the file;these variable names are used by the statistical and graphical programs to obtain data and information from the files, so that the transfer of data becomes completely independent of the exact format or contents of the files. The preprocessing capability, together with the flexibility conferred by self-explanatory files, has made the system powerful and versatile in its applications to human chromosome analysis.
