A Study of Magnetospheric Substorms in Conjunction with the Vela Satellite Data

The purpose of this project is to examine the complex behaviors of the plasma sheet during magnetospheric substoms using Vela satellite data and of the simultaneous ground data, such as allsky photographs and magnetic records It is our hope that the proposed study will lead to an understanding of the causes of magnetospheric substorms.nA magnetospheric substoms results from the conversion of magnetic energy into kinetic energy of plasma particles. A similar process is believed to occur in the vicinity of sunspots, a solar flare. Thus, the understanding of Sulston processes is expected to throw light on one of the fundamental modes of energy production displayed by nature. Indeed, we are now certain that basic processes associated with the interaction between the solar wind and the magnetosphere is very similar to those of the MHD dynamo. The principal investigator (PI) gave a P4 physics seminar on this topic on March 13, 1973, the title of the seminar was "Recent advances in auroral physics".
