Great strides have been made by the orthopedic surgeon in his use of prosthetic appliances in the human body. Complementary progress has been seen in the development of implants by the surgical manufacturing industry. In spite of these advancements, some prosthetic devices do corrode and some do fail. Hostile environmental conditions of the implants are highly influential in limiting the service life so the selection of the material, and, equally important, the design and fabrication must be made with extreme care.
