THE DEVELOPMENT, IMPLEMENTATION AND EFFECT OF A PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULING SYSTEM IN AN INDUSTRIAL PLANT

A study was made of both the theoretical approach and the practical industrial approach to develop a preventive maintenance (PM) system for an industrial job shop environment. In many industries the data necessary for the theoretical approach is not available, and it is too costly to obtain prior to setting up a PM program. A system was developed which attempts to blend the analytical approach with the practical industrial approach in order to minimize maintenance costs by adjusting PM frequencies as a function of machine breakdowns and machine usage.nIn this study, a computer was used to schedule repetitive PM tasks and level workloads according to given criteria. A data collection system was developed, and information from the system was used to adjust PM frequencies toward optimum intervals to minimize total maintenance costs.
