CONSOLE-ORIENTED INFORMATION STORAGE AND RETRIEVAL SYSTEM FOR THE NUCLEAR SAFETY INFORMATION CENTER

The purpose of this report is to familiarize current and prospective users with the basic functions and operating procedures of the information storage and retrieval system developed for the Nuclear Safety Information Center (NSIC). This system was designed and implemented by the staff of the Computing Technology Center for the IBM 360/50-65. Bibliographic information is input primarily via IBM 2260 Display Stations with an alternate means provided through punched cards processed in the background batch environment. The Master and Index files are stored on direct access devices with backup maintained on magnetic tapes. The direct access files may be searched in a nonsequential manner using teleprocessing programs designed for use with the IBM 1050, 2740, and 2260 slow- and intermediate-speed terminals. In addition, retrospective searching and selective dissemination of information (SDI) capabilities are provided in the batch mode using the magnetic tape backup files as input.
