Changes in Dimensions, Modulus of Elasticity and Thermal Conductivity due to Regraphitization caused by Neutron Irradiation Paper read to spring meeting of the Carbon Working Party of the German Ceramics Society
It is known that the thermal graphitization of different graphites varies depending on the type of coke employed. Coke made from petroleum or pitch possesses good graphitization properties, for instance, unlike carbon black, resin and blast furnace coke. Cellulose cokes and anthracite come somewhere in between these two extremes (Ref.l).nUnder neutron irradiation in the reactor, where graphite is employed at high temperatures as a structural material and moderator, radiation-induced graphitization takes place which depends to a certain extent on the degree of thermal graphitization attained.nSome examples are given below of the consequences of macroscopic damage to graphite caused by fast neutron irradiation (Figs. 1-3).
