The design process for converting an existing manually operated vacuum brazing furnace into a computer controlled automatic system is presented. Emphasis is placed on hardware design. The existing system and operating procedure, as it relates to the automatic system design, is discussed. The use of a computer, and the decision to use a microprocessor, are justified. The paper discusses in detail the computer-compatible SCR driver circuit. A generalized design for the system software and control algorithm is given, along with the scaling routines for displaying the furnace data.
