Report describes a new high-strength die-cast projectile designed for the LLL two-stage light-gas gun. In addition to easy fabrication, the new design promotes flat impact between the planar surface of the accelerating projectile and a stationary target. Tilt and surface distortion, deviations that affect flat impact, are measured for the newly- designed projectile accelerated to 6.7 km/sec. Time variations due to surface distortion were less than ±3 nsec;those due to projectile tilt were within ±10 nsec, across a central 20-mm-diameter circle on the 24-mm-diameter impactor plate.
