A new emergency sealing device, the Osborne Valve Capper, has been designed at the Portsmouth Area Gaseous Diffusion Plant for sealing off leaking uranium hexafluoride cylinder valves. Defective valves caused by corrosion of valve body and stem seats or galling of valve components must be sealed as quickly and efficiently as possible under emergency conditions to minimize health and safety hazards resulting from the release of uranium hexafluoride to the working environment.nThe Osborne Valve Capper, a stainless-steel, clamp-like device that can be quickly hooked over a cylinder valve, contains a tapered Teflon-faced plug that can be forced into the cylinder valve port opening by turning a knob on a hand wheel located on the capper.
