RECTANGULAR-DCB SPECIMENS FOR FAST FRACTURE AND CRACK ARREST MEASUREMENTS

This note offers guidelines for the design instrumentation and analysis of rectangular-DCB (double-cantilever-beam) specimens for measuring fast fracture and crack arrest. The guidelines are drawn from a theoretical (1-3) analysis of crack propagation of the specimen and a large number of experiments at Battelle over a period of 5 years. The guidelines are tentative and should not be regarded as an accepted practice. More work is needed to resolve controversies about the way crack velocity and arrest measurements are made and interpreted, and this is now in progress at Battelle's Columbus Laboratories, MRL and the Universities of Illinois and Maryland. In the meantime, this information is provided to assist those who wish to conduct similar experiments.
