ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF ATMOSPHERIC CONTAMINANTS IN URBAN AREAS

A number of variations in the meteorological regime of cities are examined (formation of "heat islands" at the center of the city, increase of the frequency of fog, lifted inversions, surface calms, etc.). It is noted that the main part of the theoretical investigations of atmospheric diffusion relate to open and level terrain. The degree to which they obtained results can be used to characterize the contaminant dissipation in urban areas is defined. Characteristics of atmospheric diffusion and the role of factors determining the dissipation of a contaminant due to high and low sources in cities are also analyzed.
