The application of mass spectrometry to biomedical problems has been remarkably successful in certain areas - namely, the structure elucidation of isolated natural products such as steroids, amino acids, and sugars.nThe application of mass spectrometry to biomedical problems has been remarkably successful in certain areas - namely, the structure elucidation of isolated natural products such as steroids, amino acids, and sugars. The advent of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry introduced a new problem to the analytical chemist - how to coherently organize the reams of mass spectral data generated by gc-ms-computer systems into a format much would enable different laboratories to make use of these reference spectra. At the 19th Annual Conference on Mass Spectrometry and Allied Topics innA second project was then initiated at the University of Colorado Medical Center to compile mass spectral data of compounds primarily of endogenous physiological origin, particularly those which had been derivative for gc-ms.
