The general requirements of heaters for the Pressurized-water Reactor Blowdown Heat Transfer Program are summarized and the known experiences with heaters of organizations doing blowdown heat transfer work are tabulated. Heaters of about 0.422 in. outside diameter and 12 ft heated length (20 ft over¬all length) are required that can operate at power levels up to about 150 kW with peak heat fluxes of 600,000 Btu hr_1 ft-2 (°F)-1 and axial power distribution profiles similar to those of water-cooled power reactors. Rapid-response thermocouples are required to follow the surface temperature fluctuations during transient tests.
