A Model for the CW Power Output of the HF Chemical Laser

A radiation model is presented for inclusion in hydrody¬namics codes calculating steady-state chemical lasing conditions. The model assumes that if sufficient gain exists for lasing to occur, then P-branch lasing occurs for 3-2, 2 -1 1 and l-0 tran¬sitions at the (local) J value corresponding to maximum zero power gain. For simplicity, all HF states with v>3 are ignored. The theory yields the local and total power output, the local specific intensity of the radiation field and the local distri-bution of the HF population among the vibrational states. Very crude predictions could be obtained for the spectral distribution of the emitted radiation, although the theory is not well suited to that purpose.
