UPRATING OF GENERAL ELECTRIC 5 KV SWITCHGEAR

Uprating of General Electric 5 Kv switchgear has been accomplished on a prototype by Goodyear Atomic Corporation personnel using forced-air ventilation in compliance with NEMA and ANSI standards for power switchgear assemblies. Before modification, the twenty year-old switchgear exhibited a hot spot temperature rise of 58°C as a result of application of the nameplate continuous current rating of 2000 amperes on the main bus sections. After installation of two fans and several grills and louvers, the prototype switchgear assembly was capable of 3000 amperes with a hot spot temperature rise of 53°C on the main bus sections. The prototype modification was used to develop a standard uprating design, which is described, and which will be the basis for uprating modifications to G. E. switchgear at the three plant Atomic Energy Commission gaseous diffusion complex.
