LOADING OF FUEL AND REFLECTOR ELEMENTS IN THE FORT ST. VRAIN INITIAL CORE (RESULTS OF START-UP TEST A-l)

The loading of FSV fuel and reflector elements was started on December 27, 1973. Loading was carried out on a 24-hr/day basis;and the last ele-ment was loaded January 16, 1974, 20 days after the start of loading. Fig. 1 shows the time progression of the loading.nThe fuel elements, side reflector elements and top reflector elements were inspected, brought to the refueling floor and loaded by manual methods into the reactor through the PCRV penetrations in a prespecified sequence, using special loading equipment. In general, the seven elements comprising one layer of a region (normally seven but up to eleven in the outer regions) were loaded through the refueling penetration for that region, and the en¬tire layer loading completed prior to loading the next layer.
