REACTIONS OF LANTHANON SEQUIOXIDES WITH DIVALENT EUROPIUM OXIDE BY VAPOR-PHASE TRANSPORT

Reactions between solid pieces of Ln2 03 (where Ln = Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) and EuO were carried out in Mo capsules at 1500°C via vapor-phase transport. The products of the reactions were sectioned and then examined using optical microscope, x-ray powder diffraction, and electron microprobe techniques. Based on these examinations, it is concluded that binary compounds and/or solid solutions of orthorhombic structure, which (to first-order approximation) are isostructural to Eu304 , are the general products of these reactions. Solid solutions of EuO in Ln203 and of Ln203 in EuO also appear to be general reaction products.
