ERDA is sponsoring an in Situ Coal Gasification Research and Development Program, because the in situ technology offers several potential advantages:it requires, a lower casual investment than surface gasification plants, it uses coal reserves not readily recoverable by other methods, and it reduces health, safety and environmental problems relative to conventional coal mining. The objective of ERDA's program is to develop through pilot scale by the early 1980's processes for in situ coal gasification and to support larger-scale demonstrations needed to predict the economics of commercial operation.
