摘要

The Heavy-Section Steel Technology Program is an engineering research activity being conducted by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in coordination with other research sponsored by the federal government and private organizations.nBoth large and small surface-flawed tensile specimens that failed by tensile instability have been analyzed to determine whether stable crack growth was a factor. Evidence of a size effect in these tests is shown analytically to be consistent with the hypothesis that stable crack growth increases with increasing specimen size.
