METROMEX URBAN-RURAL, WINDS-ALOFT MEASUREMENTS;DOUBLE-THEODOLITE PILOT-BALLOON RUNS August 1971, St. Louis, Missouri

As part of the METROMEX program in August 1971, doubletheodolite pilot-balloon runs were made simultaneously over urban, suburban, and rural locations in the vicinity of St. Louis, Missouri. This report presents the results obtained during 7 daytime and 7 nighttime operational periods, each on a different day. Between 6 and 9 sites were used during a majority of the operational periods, which were typically about 3 hours long. In this time 8 pilot balloons were launched from each site. Balloons were released 20 minutes apart for 2 sets of 4 runs each, with a 30-minute break between sets. Day runs usually began at 1520 Z and night runs at 0220 Z.
