The standard establishes requirements for the design and operation of common types of installations which use gamma and x radiation for non-medical purposes. Its objective is to protect persons who work with or are near such installations, as well as the general public, against, excessive exposure to radiation. Maximum permissible dose limits established by the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements are cited. Methods for achieving adequate radiation protection are described, including structural details, surveys and inspections, and operating procedures. Appendixes contain technical information useful for design of radiation shielding barriers.
