Progress has been made on the development of a flat-plate solar heat collector unit. The concept combines the solar col¬lector into a structural unit so that the collector can also function as the building roof. The unit is weathertight and insulated. It is easily installed and maintained by regular building craftsmen. The functions of efficient heat collection, liquid coolant flow passages, roof structural support and build¬ing insulation are all combined into one unit. The basic ma¬terial used is steel in order to maximize the structural strength and minimize both the cost and the energy invested in materials. The collector units have inherent long life, high reliability, and low cost when mass produced. This report constitutes the second quarterly progress report of the project. Activities described include design and procurement of the third proto¬type, selection and testing of surface coatings and foam in¬sulation, analysis of collector performance test data, plans for multiple unit array tests, system analysis, and papers presented.
