THE SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF METAL-METAL BONDED DIMERS OF TANTALUM AND TUNGSTEN

The prospect of a Jahn-Teller distortion due to the 2E' ground state predicted for D3h symmetry justiied close examination of the dimeric conformation. It was con eluded that the orbital degeneracy is lifted by a static tilt¬ing of the metal d-orbitals involved in the metal-metzl bonding to increase the overlap of one of the tr-orbitals at the expense of the other as reflected in the cant of the two terminal planes, each defined by three ligands, toward one another.
