AN EVALUATION OF HIGH PRESSURE STEEL CYLINDERS FOR FISSION PRODUCT NOBLE GAS STORAGE

The collection and long-term storage of 85Kr will be required to prevent potential local release problems at reprocessing plants and global accumulation in the atmosphere as new plants go on stream. This report discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using high pressure steel cylinders for long-term storage of 85Kr. The advantages are:n(1) well-established history of development and use in industry,n(2) long life with good thermal and radiation resistance, (3) high capacity, (4) low cost, and (5) ease of future recovery. The disad¬vantages are:(1) the potential for sudden failure of a cylinder resulting in the release of its contents, (2) the requirements that are placed on the purity of the gas to be stored, and (3) potential problems arising from the presence of the decay product rubidium. The disadvantages do not appear to be serious enough to preclude the use of high pressure steel cylinders for the long-term storage of 85Kr.
