The purpose of this volume of the report is to provide a comprehensive summary of the methods and techniques used in AIPA risk analyses to date. A separate volume on methodology is appropriate because probabilistic safety analysis still represents an emerging technology. - Owing to the requirement that the probabilities and consequences be as realistic as possible, it was necessary to expand and improve existing methods, which are predominantly licensing oriented, in several important areas. For example, it was necessary to improve system reliability modeling to account for common mode failures and system-operator interactions.
