Preliminary Interindustry Analysis of Short Term Regional Impacts of a Coal Strike

The paper describes the use of a multiregional input-output model of the United States to assess the short-term economic impacts of a severe resource shortage. Income and employment multipliers are developed on a national and regional basis to assess the impact of a sudden curtailment in coal output. Beginning with an 82 sector (2 digit SIC level) interindustry structure, key sectors, particularly those which are heavy coal consumers, are disaggregated to permit more detailed analysis.
