摘要

The aims were both basic and pragmatic. Could one measure and predict the changes which might happen in an assemblage of diatoms if the water quality alones was altered? What would be the trajectory of the diatom assemblage in a chronically stressed community if the stress was suddenly removed? An in situ incubator seemed to offer the best approach to these types of problems. In a device with free exchange of sea water, inoculate from isolated natural assemblages of diatoms with uniform histories, no initial spatial heterogeneity, and removed from problems of recruitment and selective consumption, could be studied as they achieve equilibrium trajectories even in a randomly fluctuating environment.
