The effects on chromatographic peak shape of dead volume and flow rate have been examined using the standard deviation of the Gaussian component of the peak and the exponential decay constant. For a non-retained solute edition of dead volume led to an increase in the standard deviation that was independent of flow rate while the decay constant was inversely proportional to the flow. Smaller charges were observed for a retained species.
