It now seems clear that thrombopoietin controls, in part, platelet production. In an effort to increase our knowledge in the thrombopoietin field we have conducted, during the past three years, several investigations in an attempt to clarify the production, purification, and assay of thrombopoietin. During the first year, our efforts were aimed largely at developing assay procedures for thrombopoietin. In this regard, both a bioassay and an immunoassay for thrombopoietin were developed. In the second year we turned our attention to purification and assay of thrombopoietin, the development of neutralizing antibodies to thrombopoietin, and the production of thrombopoietin by kidney cells in culture.
