Preliminary experiments are reported on the relationship between the injection mode of contact and the occurrence and magnitude of vapour explo¬sions. Water was injected beneath the surface of molten metals, chiefly tin at 250 - 900℃. Vapour explosions occurred in many, but not all, cases. The results are compared with Dullforce's observations on the dropping mode of contact and it appears that rather different behaviour is found; in particular, the present results suggest that the Temperature Interaction Zone is different for the two modes of contact.
