Lorimer and his colleagues used a TEM (100 kV) coupled with an energy dispersive X-ray analyzer to determine elemental composition for various stages of transformation. As a result of these experiments they concluded that the transformation was bainitic in nature. Clearly the question of whether diffusion occurs at the initiation of the X1-plates is still unsatisfactorily answered.nThe purpose of this work is to obtain some experimental data pertaining to this question using analytical electron microscopy.
