An Economic Analysis of Downhole Replaceable Drill Bit Systems

Governing cost equations and comparative results are presented for drilling costs associated with conventional and downhole replaceable bits. Comparison of the replaceable bi-cone concept with a conventional tri-cone bit found very few conditions in which the bi-cone system would be cost compe¬titive. However, similar analyses comparing conventional diamond bits with the new diamond chain design indicate that significant cost savings may exist over a broad range of drilling conditions.
