A number of particle separation experiments were carried out with the "Variable Density Ferrofluid Separator". Various strengths of hydrocarbon base ferrofluids were used in test density separations of micrometer-sized particles. A sample separation cell was designed and built that effectively separated sink and float sample fractions. The device was demonstrated to effectively separate particles down to nominally 50 μm on the basis of density.
