Results are reported from the May 1976--May 1977 period of research in the collective acceleration of ions from initially neutral gas by an intense pulsed electron beam. Experimental results of the program pertain to the use of gas density gradients to control beam front velocity, proton spectrum measurements, and the influence of ion mass on beam front velocity. Progress toward a unified phenomenology is also reported. (ERA citation 04:024351)
