A Continuous Magnetic Refrigerator Operating Near Room Temperature

A refrigerator is described in which the magnetic cycling of gadolinium metal is used for the refrigerating process. For the first prototype, a 1.2-T field of an iron permanent magnet was used to produce =l W of cooling at a 3-K drop in temperature below room temperature.
