摘要

Volume I of this report describes and discusses oil shale deposits of the United States, applicable methods for mining the shale, and the environmental concerns associated with oil shale technologies. The major deposits of the United States exist in the Colorado-Wyoming-Utah area, known as the Green River Formation, and in the Upper-Mississippi-Valley-to-Michigan area, known as the Devonian and Mississippian deposits. Other deposits are located in Alaska, Texas, and the upper Midwest. The richest shale deposit is the Green River Formation, where field experi¬ments are being conducted by ERDA, the U.S. Navy, and pri¬vate industry.
