Ion Content of Synaptic Vesicles

Proton induced X-ray emission analysis measurements were performed to determine the P, S, K, Ca, Fe, Ni, Cu, and Zn ion content of presynaptic vesicles prepared from guinea-pig cortex brain. The number of different ions per single vesicle is calculated using results of the additional protein content determinations. The ion content of cholinergic and adrenergic vesicles are compared. Some rough conclusions can be made regarding the biochemistry of vesicles on the basis of this measurements, but the elucidation of the meaning of the data needs further work which will demonstrate the value of PIXE-type investigations in similar studies.
