Comment on the Unitarity Bounds for the Cross Section of Diffraction Dissociation

One essential assumption used in the derivation of a bound for the cross section of diffraction dissociation (Pumplin's bound) is that the submatrix of the scattering matrix, which corresponds to the diffractive states, is Hermitian. The implied orthogonality of the eigenstates of the submatrix is, however, not a natural consequence of the basic assumptions: unitarity and the Good-Walker picture of diffraction.
