A combination of parallel elimination on one sweep and cyclic reduction on the other sweep is shown to be the fastest known method on the STAR for solution of the equations arising in five point operator splitting or ADI methods for solving the diffusion equation. Cyclic reduction is explained and the results of implementing this method in BBC are given. A factor of three speed up is obtained for the matrix solution phase, since all trans¬poses are eliminated.
