Sampling and Characterization of Sodium-Water Reaction Products

The products of sodium-water reactions which had taken place in the Large Leak Test Rig at the Liquid Metal Engineering Center were sampled and characterized. The products consisted of the expected compounds in the Na-O-H system, and dissolved readily in ethanol. Removal of such products from a system by melting and draining does not appear feasible, but removal by dissolution in alcoholic solvents should be investigated further. (ERA citation 03:030873)
