Tracer diffusion studies have exposed the importance of thermally activated interstitial defects in a description of the mass transport of many 'metallic' solutes through the Zr lattice. Positron annihilation and lattice location measurements indicate that such solutes could exert a profound influence on the irradiation behaviour of Zr and its alloys. Both tracer diffusion and positron annihilation measurements reflect 'normal' behaviour of the lattice vacancy, while, on their own, positron annihilation studies suggest that the latter may have a significantly relaxed configuration.
