The existing organization of industrial processes can be divided into two basic groups: One in which the process is not tied directly to any other process and can be considered an industry within itself (lumber drying is an example of a single process that exists as an industry within the forest pro¬ducts industry). The second group includes most of the large centralized processing plants where the product that leaves the plant is the result of several sequential and closely tied processes. Within these industries (paper and chemical processing plants are typical examples) a central heat source produces steam at conditions required by the highest temperature process. The steam is then piped from process to process as it is eventually degraded to water and returned to the boiler. Though this does not prevent solar energy from being used on any of the multiple processes, it does give a large economic advantage to a solar system which produces a part of the central steam supply (since duplicate heat exchangers, controls, and plumbing are not needed for each individual process).
