Mathematical Modelling of Water Radiolysis: A Discussion of Various Methods

Because it is difficult to measure the concentrations of dissolved radiolytic species in reactors under operating conditions, they must be estimated by computer simulation techniques. This report discusses the mathematical modelling of water radiolysis and some of the problems involved. Two main methods are considered viz. steady-state kinetics and time-dependent kinetics. Several different computer programs for solution by each method have been tested and, where possible, comparisons made with experimental results. Preliminary conclusions on the suitability of each method have been drawn. The time-dependent method is favoured, although the material balance begins to deteriorate after about 10 seconds reaction time. The steady-state method appears to be unreliable for unknown systems.
