N-METHYL-2-PYRROLIDONE AS A STRIPPER FOR PLASTIC POTTING COMPOUNDS

The investigation was expanded to include other materials, and the scope was expanded to include potential salvage of sealed switching units and other high cost components. Results, to date, show N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone to be an effective solvent for polysulfide, polyurethane, polystyrene, rigid silicones, and all epoxy systems investigated. For failure analysis postmortem purposes, the material has proven to be far superior to all other strippers previously investigated. The concept that the material may permit noninjurious recovery and reuse of components from D-tested firesets is a potential which overshadows the initial scope of the investigation.nN-methyl-2-pyrrolidone appears to be unusually safe, presenting a comparatively low risk of fire or toxicology problems.
