The results of detailed velocity and temperature measurements are presented for the recirculating region downstream of a sudden pipe expansion in water. The velocity measurements, made using a laser doppler anemometer, also include a limited amount of turbulence information to assist in the formulation of a suitable turbulence model for a computational procedure, temperature measurements, buoyancy, and Reynolds number effects have been investigated over a limited range. No noticeable dependency was found. It is concluded that the data forms a good basis upon which to develop theoretical prediction methods. (Atomindex citation 10:463672)
